Apps Tuned with Purpose and Precision
Tuning Technology for Unique Minds
Apptuned.app was built by a team that understands cognitive diversity from the inside — through professional expertise, personal experience, and an unwavering conviction that the right apps change lives.
From Enterprise Software to Inclusive Technology
John Ray spent over a decade building enterprise software for financial institutions, telecoms companies, and public sector organisations across East Africa. He was good at it — exceptionally good. But a growing professional and personal understanding of cognitive diversity gradually redirected his focus from optimising systems to reimagining who those systems were built to serve.
Through his work, John encountered colleagues and clients whose capabilities were being systematically undervalued because the tools, processes, and expectations around them were built for neurotypical minds. He began researching the intersection of AI, accessibility, and cognitive difference — and found a landscape that was both under-resourced and profoundly consequential.
Drawing from both professional insight and a deep personal understanding of how learning and cognitive differences show up in family life, work, and education, John identified a critical gap: the near-total absence of culturally intelligent, AI-powered support tools for neurodivergent communities across Africa. Western platforms dominated the market, but they were built without the linguistic, cultural, or systemic context that made them truly accessible in African environments.
“The technology existed. The expertise existed. What was missing was a team willing to build it with genuine commitment to the communities who needed it most — and to build it from here, not export it from elsewhere.”
In 2021, John assembled a multidisciplinary team of engineers, psychologists, educators, and advocates, and launched Apptuned. Five years later, the platform has reached over 2,400 individuals across 12 countries, partnered with 180+ organisations, and earned a reputation as one of Africa's most innovative inclusive technology companies.
“Cognitive diversity isn't a problem to be accommodated. It's a competitive advantage waiting to be unlocked. Our job is to build the tools that make that possible — for everyone.”

Why Building from Kenya Matters
Africa is home to over 200 million people estimated to have some form of neurodivergent trait — the vast majority with limited access to appropriate support. Building from Kenya gives Apptuned an authentic, ground-level understanding of the cultural, linguistic, and systemic barriers that no amount of localisation from the outside could replicate.
It also gives us a perspective that enriches our global products: designing for constrained infrastructure, diverse languages, and varied educational systems makes Apptuned's tools more robust, more adaptable, and more genuinely inclusive for everyone.

What Drives Every Decision We Make
Our Mission
To empower neurodivergent individuals and the organisations that support them — by building AI-powered tools that amplify unique strengths, dismantle systemic barriers, and make cognitive diversity a celebrated advantage rather than an overlooked challenge.
Our Vision
A world — and particularly an Africa — where no neurodivergent person is held back by a lack of appropriate support, where every school and workplace is equipped to champion different minds, and where inclusive technology is the standard, not the exception.
Our Promise
To always lead with dignity. To never reduce a person to a diagnosis. To build tools that earn trust through genuine utility. And to reinvest in the communities we serve — especially those in Africa who have historically been underserved by the global technology industry.
The Values That Shape Our Work
Empathy as Architecture
Empathy is not a feature we add at the end — it is embedded in every design decision, every piece of copy, and every AI recommendation we make.
Strengths-First, Always
We lead with what makes neurodivergent minds extraordinary — creativity, pattern recognition, hyperfocus, lateral thinking — then address genuine support needs without deficit framing.
Ethical, Transparent AI
Our AI is explainable, never reductive, and held to strict privacy standards. Compliant with Kenya's Data Protection Act 2019 and GDPR principles at every layer.
African Roots, Global Ambition
We build from the ground up in an African context — culturally intelligent, linguistically aware, systemically relevant — while meeting and often exceeding international standards.
Accountable Outcomes
We measure real change: employment, wellbeing, educational attainment, team performance. Outputs matter; outcomes are what drive us.
Co-Designed with the Community
Nothing about neurodivergent people without neurodivergent people. We co-design every solution with individuals, families, educators, and clinicians who bring lived expertise.
Five Years Building Something That Matters
Apptuned founded in Nairobi after identifying critical gaps in accessible, culturally relevant AI tools for cognitive diversity across East Africa.
First AI cognitive screening tool launched in beta. Reached 300 users within 60 days; validated by partner occupational therapists and educational psychologists.
Workplace Inclusion Platform released. First enterprise partnership signed. Team grew to 10 specialists across technology, psychology, and learning design.
Expanded operations to Uganda, Tanzania, and South Africa. Passed 1,000 individuals supported milestone. First international corporate clients onboarded.
Series A funding secured. Team grew to 24. 180+ organisations partnered across 12 countries. Platform available in English and Swahili.
2,400+ individuals empowered. Launched apptuned.app — a new domain that says exactly what the product does. Named among Africa's top 10 EdTech and InclusionTech companies to watch.
Technology, Psychology & Lived Experience — United
